I knew I wanted to live in Chicago and I was interested in helping other people manage their money, but at the time I didn’t want to work for a big corporation. At a small company like Driehaus, I was able to gain exposure more quickly to different areas of the business. This has enabled me to have a greater impact on our clients’ portfolio.
My current title is Trade Support Manager, however, when I first started at Driehaus, I was hired for a position in Middle Office and then moved to Trade Support four years later. As manager of the Trade Support team, I am responsible for reducing trade and operational risks by accurately monitoring the life of a trade from order entry to settlement. I manage and maintain important documented methods and procedures for all Trade Support functions, regularly working with Middle Office, Data Management, Trading, Compliance, and IT to ensure that proper checks and balances are in place.
I tell them I manage a team within Operations at an investment management company. The Operations department helps Driehaus run as efficiently and effectively as possible. We are the chain link between departments from inception of an account to order generation and reconciliation.
Attention to detail is very important. The smallest oversight or error can have a major impact on the company.
My advice would be to strike a balance between speed and accuracy in this fast-paced work environment. There is also comfort in knowing that I am part of a strong team of people I can rely on.
Proximity to senior management. If I wanted to get coffee with our CEO or CFO, I am sure they would happily take the invitation. The same goes for the portfolio managers. We are in constant communication with all departments which enables us to perform efficiently.
The Operations and Trading team has an ongoing ritual that started eight years ago when a former coworker brought in a calendar with a daily trivia question. Every day after the market closes we huddle together and compete to be the first person to answer the trivia question correctly. The winner gets major bragging rights… until the next day.
I love spending time with my wife and my two girls. We have a two year old and a six month old . We spend a lot of time at the zoo and the park. My two year old loves being outdoors, mom and dad reading to her, and wearing dresses and tutus. She calls herself Elsa from the movie Frozen. My six month old enjoys rolling around with her sister and chewing on anything she can get her hands on.
I love skiing and snowboarding in the winter. I also enjoy playing the guitar and staying active.
Get a boat! Live in the mountains! I would like to make it to the Himalayans one day. The boat will hopefully happen in the near future so, boat now, mountains later.
