Prior to Driehaus, I was working as an office manager for a real estate developer. After the 2008 financial crisis, the company went through a rough period financially and couldn’t provide consistent pay checks. I began looking for a new job through a recruiter and was recommended for an administrative assistant position at Driehaus in the legal and compliance department.
During the interview process, I was impressed with the long tenure of employees at the firm and loved the unique building and working environment. Once I was offered the position, I happily accepted and was grateful to transition to a stable firm.
I am the regulatory specialist and am responsible for reviewing marketing materials, completing filings with the SEC and NFA, and reviewing foreign market documentation with our Operations department to open countries for trading.
To keep it simple, I explain that I do regulatory filings with the SEC and review the tiny disclosure on marketing pieces that is often overlooked.
My advice would be that you must be detail-oriented and patient. It’s also important to maintain good relationships across departments as everyone works together so closely. I’ve also found that having an encouraging manager and being willing to learn new things is essential. When I started at Driehaus, I had no background in finance aside from a few courses in college, but my manager encouraged me to get the Series 7 and 63 licenses, which fast tracked my understanding of the fundamentals of the industry.
The people. Everyone is team oriented and willing to help-out. Working alongside people that are willing to ask and/or answer any question without judgement creates an inclusive environment that fosters growth. Additionally, I find that co-workers genuinely care for each other and are supportive and understanding both within a professional and personal realm.
My favorite memory is one of the annual summer parties that Richard Driehaus hosted where the Beach Boys headlined. It was a beautiful night and the songs reminded me of when I was a kid. The fireworks were amazing and my sister-in-law and I stayed until the very end as the night flew by.
I enjoy spending time with my family. My son takes a ninja class and is involved in soccer and baseball. My daughter and I do a mommy and me gymnastics class. I also look forward to meeting up with friends, whether it be for a concert, a birthday party or a quick dinner. During social distancing, we do quite a few FaceTime/Zoom/Skype calls. I also enjoy Pilates, yoga and naps!
I really love reading. I’ve read about 250 books in the last eight years. I commute to the office via the train, so I have about three hours a day to read. One of my favorite books is The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I enjoy books that are set during WWII, even though it was a horrible time in history, it feels distant enough to provide perspective and understanding of the difficult time. I also like mystery novels and fun, beach reads.
If time and money were of no consequence, I would take the summer off to have more time with my kids, let them sleep in and visit family in Springfield and Ireland for an extended period. But I would come back to work at Driehaus in the fall because it’s a great place to be!
