A Little Background

What made you want to work at Driehaus?

I was fresh out of college and looking for opportunities when I found the Driehaus listing. I was really intrigued by the fact that it was a design job with an investment firm. My sister works in finance so I was curious as to what design skills could be applicable to her industry. I knew little about finance coming in, and no one from my design school was going into this industry, so I thought it would be an interesting opportunity!

What do you do here at Driehaus?

I’m one of only two designers here at Driehaus so I have a hand in many projects and get to work with several departments across the firm. On a regular basis, I work on updating the firm’s marketing materials, presentations, factsheets etc. and keeping the website up to date. There are a lot of one-off projects that come across our desks as well and of course, recently, we have been working on the brand redesign. I have also taken over the firm’s social media efforts, which has been a great opportunity for me to lend my skill set to keep our social media presence relevant and thriving.

How do you explain your job to friends and family?

Essentially I tell them that I am a designer at an investment firm, I’ve found that the simpler the explanation the better. I did hear my dad refer to me as a financial designer once. I think it has a nice ring to it…

What advice would you give for people in this role or people who want to pursue this role?

The skills that I use the most are prioritizing and attention to detail. I regularly work with a large amount of data from various sources, so attention to detail is really key in making sure everything ends up in the correct place. I’m also constantly juggling regular tasks with other one-off design requests to make sure everything is done in a timely manner.

What advice would you give to help manage the stress in this position?

Having a great office mate helps! I’m also on a different floor then the rest of my department, so I’ll try and take the time to go up to visit. It’s a nice break and it helps to know that we’re all working together toward a greater goal. Going out to lunch when you have the time, or taking a walk is also helpful.

What about Driehaus

What makes Driehaus distinctive?

This is tricky because it’s my first job and I don’t have much to compare it to. However, when I talk about my job to my siblings or friends they remind me that we have some great perks here. I’ve also always felt that my team here builds me up and is extremely supportive, not at all a competitive culture, which I feel is unique.

What is your favorite memory at Driehaus?

I know this is a good problem to have, but it is hard to pick! Our department has group lunches and I especially appreciated them when I first started because it gave me a chance to get to know everyone out of the office and in a more casual setting. They really helped me develop the relationships I have and the employee I am today.

Sarah after work

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to hang out with family and friends. I have three nephews who I am obsessed with, so going out to the suburbs to see them and my parents is a regular event. I also specialize in finding new Netflix shows for my roommate and I to watch.

What are your hobbies?

I have always had a passion for illustration, more recently I have gotten into illustrating digitally. I am also a member of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Chicago chapter.

If money and time were of no consequence, what would you do?

That is easy; I would buy several vacation homes in different countries and fly all my friends and family to them.
